Let us talk Google – Instant Messaging Service from Google.

Search engine giant Google has recently released it’s instant messaging service called Google Talk. Here is the full review of Google Talk.

When Google first announced their IM service, I expected that the great G will come up with some thing magic just like when they launched Gmail last year. But after the release, I was disappointed, forget about the new magic features it does not even have some of the basic features provided by other IM services like Yahoo and MSN.
One good thing about Google Talk is portability, it is very portable as it’s ‘exe’ file size is just 899 KB. The interface of Google Talk is very simple and basic. It does not have many buttons and options, it does not offer any chat rooms like Yahoo, It only allows you to talk/chat with your buddies having gmail account.

Google Talk

Free PC to PC calls- I use Google Talk daily to talk with my friend in Bangalore. The quality of the conversation is very good and can be compared with the quality of conversation over the cell phone. I have tried YM’s PC to PC calls too, but Google is the clear winner in terms of quality.

One of the features missing in Google Talk is Off-line Messaging, you can not send offline messages with Google Talk. Another thing missing in GT is smilies, there are no smilies in Google Talk. The great G may provide these two features in the future versions of GT.

Can Google really compete with IM gaints like Yahoo, MSN and Skype ? The answer is it can’t compete with them at this moment, but in future it can. Instant Messaging is not an individual’s choice, it’s a group’s choice, for instance I prefer Google Talk over YM, but I still have to use YM as most of my friends use YM and they don’t have gmail accounts.

Another good thing about Google Talk is it uses Jabber Protocol. Jabber Protocol is an open source IM protocol, this means that GT can be easily tuned with other messengers using Jabber protocol. This will enable you to talk/chat with the users of other Instant Messengers.

To conclude, Google Talk not great, but it is sleek , easy to download and use. Quality of the voice conversation is good and better than YM’s voice quality. We have to wait and see how Google comes up with new innovations to compete with the rest of the IM giants.
